Tip number one: Be yourself.
It's your first day at work, you can't know everything!But there's a reason you got this job.So you probably have a great personality.
Tip two: Be honest.
Probably the worst thing you can do is give somebody an answer that you're not really
sure of; but probably the easiest thing you can do is just say: "look, I'm so sorry, it's
my first day at work, I don't know the answer, but I can find out for you and I will get
back to you straight away".
Tip three: is focus on your service.
An old advice is: treat every customer as though it was your mother.
Again, you might not know everything, but just try to imagine: if your mother was going
to another restaurant, how would you like her to be treated, and treat every customer
just like that.
Tip number four: get to know your team.
Joining a new team can be a little bit daunting: a lot of people from different countries,
and they all seem to know what they are doing and you don't.
It doesn't have to be like this!
Get to know them.
Look at this as an opportunity to know new languages, new cultures, and get better at
what you do.
Tip five: I know it sounds scary, but go to the kitchen.
In many restaurants, the kitchen is the scariest place in the business.
But it doesn't have to be like that: on your first day, make sure you go to the kitchen,
you meet the chef and you say: "Hi, my name is ... and this is my first day at work; I'm
going to make a lot of mistakes" and leave!
And finally, tip number six: take the time, and spend a little bit of money, getting to know the product you're selling.
Some restaurants will let you taste the whole menu for free before you start work, but some
restaurants won't...
It doesn't have to stop you.
take the time every now and then, to come early, or stay afterwork, or come on your
day off, and order something from the menu and taste it, and get to know your product.
The better you know your product, the more confident you're going to be serving customers.
So remember, six things: be yourself, be honest, treat everybody like they were your mother
and get to know your team, your kitchen and your product.
Do all of those things and you're sure to breeze through your first day at work.
